Hon. Director of Public Werks,

1. The dredger is still at work off Tsim Sha Tsui.

2. The estimated period for dredging wes 4 months

(vide ur. Churchill's minute of the 8.8.14), but that estimate

was subject to the dredger working smoothly. Dredging

commenced on the Erd, of August 1915 and has continued

intermittently ever since. To recapitulate the breakdowns

and recall the trouble the Europeen officers of the vessel

gave would serve little purpose, for the incidents were brought

to the notios of Government as they coourred. It will sufrios

to state that no fewer than 8 masters, 4 chief engineers, E

second engineers and 8 third enginsere have beer employed

during the period of working. Since August 9th. of this year,

the dredger has been run entirely with a Chiness orer subject

only to the daily attendance of Er. Euncer and, eirce that

dete, steady though slow progress has been made under this

regiae. The dredger oen saw only be worked elowly, for the

obain of buckets has been so patched and repetched that to do

otherwise would be to court disaster, but it is satisfectery

to be able to report that she is at present, working steadily.

B. The estimated cost of the dredging was $46,600.

This sum included $2,000 for commissioning the verse1, £8,000

fer insurance fer a period of four months and $2,000 for

interest an ospital and depreciation. The last-merfioned item

was for ens menth enly, that being the estimated time that the

dredger would be engaged in carrying out the dredging which

was to be executed at the expense of the Gedown Go. The amount

included in this estimate for running oberges was therefore

$58,200.

The expenditure en running charges has been as follows 2 –

During 1916

$17,897
